Ethos, Pathos, & Logos oh my, VOTEEE, Amazon is mad at Microsoft, Nextdoor app is really the police now, ICE & Trump are trife AF, Women storm Mexican Supreme Court
Aristotle defined 3 types of rhetorical appeals:
[all of which we are seeing play out in these elections]
ethos: appeals to values and ethics aka ideas of right and wrong. Asks audience to make value judgments, which as you know can get a bit messy because values are not universal.
pathos: or a pathetic appeal. This is the most powerful form of appeal because it appeals to emotion. It is characterized by concrete language, figurative language, personal examples, and anything that will evoke and emotional response from the audience.
logos: Appeals to logic aka the mind. This type of appeal relies on data, analogies, stats, quotations, citations from experts and authorities. Is cognitive and rational.
It’s also worth noting that in order to activate these you must have a strong sense of who your audience is. You can tell the saddest story ever but if no one can identify with you it’s not going to get you any sympathy.
Pay attention to why you agree with certain appeals and assumptions. Ask yourself — especially around the elections—what appeals are you seeing out there? As you read through this weeks stories ask yourself which appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos.

Trump Says Buttigieg’s Exit Is Start of “Dems Taking Bernie out of Play.” Polls Tell a Different Story.
Buttigieg has left the building. FINALLY! And Trompas es un pendejo.
While the idea that Buttigieg’s exit from the race will directly benefit Biden seems like conventional wisdom, polls tell a more complicated story. A recent Morning Consult poll showed that Buttigieg’s supporters are pretty divided and their top second choice is none other than Sen. Bernie Sanders. Twenty-one percent of Buttigieg’s supporters described the senator from Vermont as their second choice. Biden and Sen. Elizabeth Warren are tied for a close second place with 19 percent, and Michael Bloomberg isn’t far behind with 17 percent.
A Quinnipiac* national poll from last month also shows that there may not be such a clear straight line from Buttigieg to Biden, with the obvious caveat that lots has likely changed since Feb. 10. In that poll, the top second choice for Buttigieg’s supporters was divided between Warren and Sen. Amy Klobuchar, each with 26 percent, followed by Biden with 19 percent, and Sanders, 11 percent.
Bernie Sanders Lost the Black Vote. That’s Probably a Problem Going Forward.
Ya’ll, beware of articles like this that make sweeping generalizations because of one State. These serve two functions:
misinformation— you cannot draw a conclusion like that based on one state. period.
disillusionment that relies on group think. “well if they don’t like him then maybe I need to re-evaluate.” “Well all those people can’t be wrong” “He really isn’t electable” type of stuff

Judge temporarily blocks Microsoft Pentagon cloud contract after Amazon suit
Court documents filed last December laid out in greater detail why AWS is challenging the decision. In them, AWS alleged Trump launched “behind-the-scenes attacks” against the company, which caused it to lose out on the cloud contract. AWS has called for the Defense Department to terminate the award and conduct another review of the submitted proposals.
Earlier this week, Amazon said in newly unsealed court documents that it’s looking to depose Trump, Defense Secretary Mark Esper and former Defense Secretary James Mattis as part of its protest of the JEDI cloud contract award. Amazon argues that it needs to hear from Trump to learn the scope of his involvement in the bidding process.
Amazon’s top spokesperson Jay Carney told CNBC on Wednesday that the company is protesting the decision to make sure the award process was “free of political interference.”
Somebody call the waaaaambulance. Amazon is throwing a fit. I also think it’s pretty crazy that the DNC wants to talk about “good billionaires” while Microsoft and Amazon fight over government contracts. The JEDI contract is worth up to $10 billion over 10 years. Bezos thinks he didn’t get it because Trump doesn’t like him.
Nextdoor Wants to Be a One-Stop Shop for Police
Nextdoor’s many eyes-on-the-street fill the site with reports of car break-ins, suspicious characters, and other local-level threats.
Such citizen reports are increasingly being directed to the responsible municipal agencies. Nextdoor’s “Forward to Police” feature, for example, was introduced in 2016, allowing users in participating jurisdictions to send crime and public safety reports directly to law enforcement.
With the launch of this new app, Nextdoor is making its alignment with public institutions more explicit. “Neighbors turn to Nextdoor every day to find trusted, relevant information about what’s happening where they live,” said Tatyana Mamut, Nextdoor’s head of product, in a statement. “Now, our agency partners can send information to their constituents with the tap of a button anywhere andanytime—even when they are away from their desk, after hours, or in the field.”
For those that don’t know Nextdoor is most popularly used by gentrifiers and racists to target Black and Latinx. I don’t want European-Americans [this is my official term moving forward if POC have to hypenate ie. Mexican-American, African-American, Asian-American, errybody hypenating] “crime monitoring” more than they already do. This is a terrible idea.

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION ARGUES IT COULD BE 'TRAUMATIC' TO REUNITE THOUSANDS OF MIGRANT CHILDREN WITH THEIR PARENTS
The American Civil Liberties Union has slammed the Trump administration's position. A hearing is scheduled for February 21 to determine whether the government will be required to reunite the children who were released before the June court order.
"The Trump administration's response is a shocking concession that it can't easily find thousands of children it ripped from parents, and doesn't even think it's worth the time to locate each of them," Lee Gelernt, the lead ACLU attorney, said, according to the AP.
Yes because we know they care so much about the well being of children. I want to know why the outrage subsided about these kids. This is wrong and it’s yet another stain on this country and it’s so called “values.”
Medicare for All Would Save $450 Billion and 68,000 Lives: Study
Bernie Sanders’ Medicare-for-All plan would save the country about $450 billion a year on total health care spending while preventing nearly 70,000 deaths, according to a study published over the weekend in The Lancet.
In the analysis, a team of epidemiologists led by Alison P. Galvani of the Yale School of Public Health applied the provisions of Sanders’ plan to real-world spending in the U.S. in 2017. They concluded that Medicare for All would have cost just over $3 trillion that year, or $458 billion less than the actual total. The analysis found that per capita costs would decline, resulting in lower costs overall, even with millions more people covered. And providing universal coverage would save 68,531 lives per year, the researchers.

'MASS CHAOS' ERUPTS AT IMMIGRATION COURTS AFTER ICE HANDS FAKE HEARING DATES TO MIGRANTS
In this case, ICE had handed out Notice to Appear documents with the January 31 date. However, an ICE official explained to Newsweek that while hearings should have been scheduled for that day, they weren't, in part due to the recent partial government shutdown.
The ICE official said that while hearings had not been set up for January 31, they were not "fake." Asserting that the date had been provided to ICE by the Executive Office for Immigration Review, the official said the Notice to Appear documents had needed to be filed by January 15 in order for them to be processed before the January 31 hearing date, but due to the government shutdown, ICE was unable to file them until the shutdown was over.

Mexican Supreme Court Stormed & Vandalized As Hundreds March Against Femicide
Happy Women’s History Month ya bish.
The walls of the governmental palace were redecorated with graffiti. The march then made its way to the building of the Supreme Court of Sonora. There, the front doors were torn down, windows were shattered, walls were graffitied and court paperwork was burned to ash.
The action lasted no more than two hours, but the point was made clear. The women of Hermosillo, of Sonora, of Mexico in general, have had enough of the violent reality they face on a daily basis. They’ve had enough of the fear of getting in a taxi cab, or walking in a dark alley at night. They’ve had enough of being whistled at, groped and touched on public transportation. They’ve had enough of having their compañeras, daughters, sisters, aunts and mothers, raped and killed. They’ve had enough of a government that delegitimizes and mocks their very real concerns.
No pos wow.
No justice no peace.
